For iron deficiency that oral tablets haven't fixed
IV iron isn’t a first-line treatment — it’s for people who are confirmed iron deficient and either can’t tolerate tablets, don’t absorb them well, or need levels corrected faster than tablets allow. A blood-based assessment always comes first.
- Confirmed iron deficiency anaemia – Low ferritin or haemoglobin confirmed on blood testing, where correction is needed.
- Intolerance to iron tablets – Where oral iron causes significant gastrointestinal side effects.
- Absorption conditions – IBD, coeliac disease or previous gut surgery affecting how iron is absorbed.
- Pregnancy-related deficiency Where a GP or obstetrician has identified a need for faster correction.

Nothing is infused without a confirmed need. The process is the same whether you’re referred by your GP or coming to us directly.

- Suitability check – A short health screen to confirm IV iron is appropriate and safe for you.
- Infusion – Delivered in a comfortable treatment room, monitored throughout.
- Follow-up bloods – Repeat testing a few weeks on to confirm levels have improved.
IV iron is a prescription-only treatment. It’s only given after blood tests confirm deficiency and a clinician has assessed that it’s appropriate for you — it isn’t available as a walk-in or wellness top-up.

Frequently asked questions
What is an IV iron infusion?
It is a way of delivering iron directly into a vein through a small cannula, usually in a single
appointment. It restores iron stores far more quickly than tablets and bypasses the digestive
system entirely.
Is this the same as a blood transfusion?
No. The two are completely different. You receive only iron in a sterile solution. No blood or blood products from a donor are involved at any point.
Who might benefit from IV iron?
People with confirmed iron deficiency, with or without anaemia. It is particularly useful if you cannot
tolerate oral iron, absorb it poorly (for example with coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or
after bariatric surgery), have heavy periods, or need your levels corrected quickly.
What symptoms does iron deficiency cause?
Fatigue, breathlessness on exertion, poor concentration, hair thinning, brittle nails, restless legs and reduced exercise tolerance are all common. Many people have symptoms before they become
anaemic.
Do I need blood tests before treatment?
Yes. We need to see your ferritin, transferrin saturation, full blood count and inflammatory markers
before treating. If you already have recent results, bring them and we will review them at no extra
cost.
Will you look for the cause of my deficiency?
Yes. Iron deficiency is a symptom rather than a diagnosis in itself. We take a full history and will
advise you if further investigation or a referral is appropriate.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us. With your consent, we will write to your GP after your treatment
so your records stay up to date.
What happens on the day?
You will have a short review and consent discussion, then a cannula is placed in your arm and the infusion runs. Afterwards you are observed in the clinic before going home. Please allow around 90 minutes in total.
Does it hurt?
The cannula feels much like a routine blood test. The infusion itself is usually painless, though
some people notice a mild sensation in the arm.
What are the possible side effects?
Commonly, a temporary headache, nausea, a metallic taste or mild joint and muscle aches for a
day or two. Less commonly, brown staining of the skin can occur if the drip leaks at the cannula
site. Allergic-type reactions are rare, which is why we observe you after treatment and have trained
staff and full resuscitation equipment on site.
How soon will I feel the benefit?
Many people notice improved energy within two to four weeks, although it can take longer. Blood
levels are usually rechecked 6 to 8 weeks after treatment.
How many infusions will I need?
Most patients need only one. The dose depends on your weight and your starting iron levels. If
your deficiency is severe, we may recommend a second infusion one week later, which is charged
separately.
Can I drive home and return to work?
Yes. Most people carry on as normal afterwards, though we suggest taking the rest of the day at an
easy pace.
Who is not suitable for IV iron?
IV iron is not given in the first trimester of pregnancy, or to anyone with iron overload, an active
infection, or a previous reaction to intravenous iron. We assess all of this at your consultation.
